Ordinary Crush Vol 1 Yaoi Hyouta Fujiyama 9781569708132 Books

Ordinary Crush volume 1 starts with a common yaoi plot, Nanase is tricked into a relationship with Heiji, and accidentally falls for him. Only it is a lot smoother than that. Hyouta Fujiyama writes very long chapters, so there is sufficient time for their feelings to evolve. Because of this, it comes off much more naturally than you would expect. When Nanase learned the whole truth, I thought (when reading it) that Heiji started this whole thing out of jealousy. However, you are set up for the usual when the first page explains it's an all boys high school where 90% of the boys are gay or bi. It almost becomes a running gag as if the author is making fun of the "boys school" theme instead of just making use of it. All in all, the main couple are a lot of fun.
Other characters are quickly introduced: Nanase's friend, a playboy type (I wish there was a romance for him); a first year who has a crush on Heiji; the school doctor, who has rumors swirling around him; and some college boys. Nobody gets much work done it seems as all they think about is relationships. Not that matters much at a escalator school (the high school is connected to a college so as long as they graduate they're set for college).
After the main story there is a four page short story, a yaoi free story about a man and his android, and a short story about two of the college boys, one of whom had a crush on Nanase. It's a good first volume and luckily there is a second volume to wrap things up.
One more thing, I am not that fond of the artist style. I don't hate it, I just wish their hair didn't hang in their faces. In my opinion, the look only looks good on Yamato the first year. He is so cute with his big black eyes, I just want to hug him.

Ordinary Crush Vol 1 Yaoi Hyouta Fujiyama 9781569708132 Books Reviews

This was my introduction to this mangaka and it did not make a great impression. I do not like this particular style of artwork, which uses a lot of dark tones and has a tendency to very spare backgrounds (or no background at all). I found it difficult to keep track of who was who in the main story, since I felt the characters were not differentiated via the artwork well (and too many of the volleyball players looked alike). In fact, the only ones I could reliably identify were two of the secondary characters.
The main story was a pretty typical school friend turned lover scenario, but I felt it was rushed. If I hadn't read the jacket blurb, I would not have known that both protagonists were supposed to be straight. That said, there were original moments, such as the conclusion of the "betrayal." I also thought the mangaka took a rather thoughtful approach to her character's "first time." He did some realistic "information gathering" that was kind of sweet & also humorous.
The bonus stories are mostly nonentities. "Doctor Kazuhiro Asano" expanded on two of the more interesting secondary characters from the main story. It actually never really went anywhere, but it does set up for a sequel story that has more of a plot in volume 2. "Friends," a four-page piece that is a much older work, is also not a story, per se. It is more of a character study that implies an ending.
The final story, "Automatic Smile," is arguably the best piece in the book. I found the protagonist to be a more interesting character than any of the others. He is irascible but thoughtful. While this story is also more of a character study than a plot, at least the characters are differentiated through artwork and personality and are intriguing. Their relationship is more complex master-servant, teacher-student, person-android. There is growth in this awkward relationship that begs the question of what will happen next.
Regarding the presentation, this is a 2007 Juné imprint of DMP in the larger, dust-jacketed format. The print and paper quality are typical for this imprint - clean, sharp images on heavy, soft-white paper. The type in this volume is clear, but is smaller than I expect in Juné's larger formats. I found it pretty hard to read, especially when it was on a toner-heavy background. The gutters for this imprint are usually pretty generous; even so, it seemed that there was a lot of dialogue crowding the crease. I cannot speak for the translation, but there were few or no typos, which is always appreciated.
I normally go for more hardcore yaoi, and this is barely BL. There is some kissing involved and talk of M/M sex, but that's about it. All in all, I give it three stars for the final story and the bits of the main story that I enjoyed. If you are completing a collection of Fujiyama's work (or a comprehensive BL collection), go ahead. Otherwise, my opinion is that there is a lot of much better offerings available.
This story is consider funny. I also include few one-shots. I would love to continue this series.
While I'm an avid Fujiyama Hyouta fan, and I'd readily talk about how I love her art style and her way with characters, this particular yaoi wasn't at it's best. At times it felt kinda shallow and rushed, only skimming the surface of what was really beneath it all. I don't regret my purchase, I just wish it had a bit more context to it than it did. Though that could only be because I compared it to her other work, Dear Green, Dear Green Hitomi no Ounowa, and Lover's Flat. It's a nice read if you have nothing better to do, and want something that's easy on the mind and kinda relaxing.

The characters are fun and rather likable in a strange way, even the side characters had bundles of personality. It felt like it was all encompassing rather than focusing on just one couple, it felt more broad in a sense. You got a glimpse of a lot of personalities, which helped ease the monotony and made it rather enjoyable. I'd recommend it only if you're a fan of her previous works, or curious. I do plan to buy it's sequel Sunflower and the sorta kinda side story Freefall Romance.
