I had never read O. Henry before, but as a lover of short stories his name was unavoidable. I finally decided to remedy my ignorance of this master of the craft, and settled on this Kindle edition as an introduction.

A few notes on the formatting: I loved the clickable Table of Contents, and routinely used it to navigate between different stories. There is one story that is not listed in the ToC... I found it hidden between two others, like an easter egg. Other than this omission, the Table of Contents was extremely useful, and the whole thing was much better put together than I expected for a $2 e-book.

The stories themselves are wonderful. While this volume contains a great many stories, it was brief enough that I didn't become completely tired of them by the end. Enough of O. Henry's work relies on similar twists and themes that I did find myself predicting the outcomes by the end, but even knowing there was a twist coming and looking for it, the majority of the stories still surprised me. These clever endings are enough of a trademark for Henry that it's easy to get distracted by them and miss the quality of the writing... his dialogue and wordplay are always witty and amusing.

All in all, I found this a great introduction to an author I'd always meant to check out... and it's hard to argue with the price.

Great book! Brought back memories of high school literature classes. I bought the book as a gift for my son and his girlfriend, but read some of the stories first!
No matter what;I always have time for O. Henry, his writing reminds me how well the English language can be used,mainly amusing and thought provoking, I'm always left with a smile.
Love it.
My reading time is limited and O'Henry relates to my interests. Short and tells a never ending tale of life's experiences.
I like the value that one receives from this compilation. But it is frustrating to try to find the story one wishes to read or return to. There is no index nor is there a quick way (or if there is, I haven't found it) to skim through the works. I won't buy the Complete or Selected works of anyone else until this problem is solved.

O'Henri is known for his stories specially for surprise ending. endings with a master twist. Yes after reading a few more stories they become predictable, but how it will take the turn remains a curiosity. Some of the stories are mere repeat of the same plot and same twist.
But " 'The last Leaf, Gift of Maggi, Green door, Caliph, Cupid and Clock and The Proof of The Pudding , Mammon and the Archer " are yet an excellent read !
Any O.Henry is better than none, but this collection left out some of the biggies. I went back to and bought the full collected works and you probably should skip this one and do that too.
