First off, this isn't a novelization of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Quite the opposite: the basic plot of Powers' book was used for the movie, and while I haven't watched the film yet, I feel like giving it a shot to see how they compare.

Powers can be uneven at time, trying to balance out a fast-paced thriller with the historical settings and high concepts he so loves, but here he succeeds on all counts with the story of John Chandagnac, a man who's ship is hijacked by pirates while en route to Jamaica. Because he was one of those who fought back, Chandagnac has the choice of either being killed or joining the crew of buccaneers, which he does under the name of Jack Shandy. He is then roped into an insane quest by Blackbeard the pirate to find the Fountain of Youth so that Blackbeard might become the immortal king of the New World. Along the way, Shandy falls in love with Elizabeth Hurwood, daughter of one of Blackbeard's confederates, Benjamin Hurwood, and a victim of a horrifying occult scheme.

There's no shortage of swashbuckling adventure as Shandy is forced to aid Blackbeard and Hurwood, then fights to stop them and save Elizabeth. The result is easily a match for Johnny Depp's onscreen adventures, and as always, Powers presents a fascinating theory behind how the strange magics and the Fountain of Youth operate, and how they impact and are impacted by the shifting eras of history. Definitely a book to try.

On Stranger Tides Tim Powers 9781930235328 Books Reviews

Let's start with, "I love to read Tim Powers novels!" That said, this is a terrific adventure. If you have seen the movie, just know that this is not the same. Tim wrote this book based on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. How do I know this? He told me, silly. Yes, I have met him on several occasions. No, he still doesn't remember my name.

Originally published in 1988, the book is, of course, not written about Captain Jack Sparrow, nor about the other characters in the movies. The main character - OK, let's call him the protagonist - is John Chandagnac. The story starts with him making his way by ship to fight for his inheritance. Of course, the ship is attacked by pirates. In order to survive, he manages to convince them he wants to be a pirate, which lands him in a new place, surrounded by strangers who have renamed him Jack Shandy.

He manages to survive, elevate his position at a faster than usual pace, and fall in love before completing his fantastic adventures.

I recommend this book highly.
This book was the basis of the fourth of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean. On the one hand, it's surprising they took so long to notice it--this was originally published in 1987. On the other hand, Powers doesn't write the same thing over and over, and this is his only "pirates of the Caribbean" novel.

Also, the movie is based very loosely on the book.

John Chandagnac is the son of a French puppeteer, who eventually left his father's business to become an accountant with an English merchant company. He's on his way to the Caribbean to track down his uncle, Sebastian, who cheated his father of his rightful inheritance when the ship, Vociferous Carmichael, is attacked by pirates. It's not long before he's pressed into pirate service, and renamed Jack Shandy.

And not long after that, working with the most famous pirate of all Blackbeard.

Vodun, or voodoo, magic is a big part of this story, with dire consequences for quite a few people Jack comes to care about. On his trip out, he'd met Elizabeth Hurwood and her father, Benjamin, who turns out to have really dire plans for her. Hurwood's partner in magic, Leo Friend, has his own terrible plans for Elizabeth.

So does Blackbeard.

Jack at least wants to have better plans for her.

If he can outwit three powerful magicians.

The plot takes many interesting twists and turns, and Jack finds some very unexpected use for his puppetry skills.

This is, as always with Powers, smart, well-written, creative, clever, and thoughtful. The characters keep surprising the reader in ways that are utterly plausible and convincing. Powers also never fails to do his research, giving the novel an overall depth and reality that just can't be counted on in freewheeling historical fantasy.

I loved it.

Highly recommended.

I bought this audiobook.
