Big Stick edition by RC Stephens Literature Fiction eBooks

A fabulous read. This one may not only make you swoon a little but may also bring a little tear to the eyes. It's all about second chances, healing, forgiveness and hockey. I love Flynn. She is slowly getting back to her old self once she moves in with her brother Oli. But that came with one thing attached old childhood friend Myles too. The sparks between Flynn and Myles never died after all these years and it so shows. As all those lovely secrets come out you can't help but hold your breathe a little for Oli, Flynn and Myles. The reaction is key and forgiveness can lead to healing and love. R.C Stephens does a fabulous job with this first book in the series. I so can't wait for more.

Big Stick edition by RC Stephens Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Big Stick is the first novel I’ve read by RC Stephens. Before picking up this book, I’d taken a bit of a reading break and was looking for something to pull me back into the mode. I’ll admit up front that I was taking a risk with this story because I haven’t read a lot of sports romances. But there was just something about the hockey player on the cover that captured my attention. And by the end of the first chapter I knew I’d chosen the right book.

This is the story of Flynn and Myles, who grew up together in Canada. As a child, Myles was born into a broken home and was eventually taken in by Flynn’s family. Myles, Flynn and her brother, Oliver, grew up together as a tight circle of friends. When the two boys are drafted to become professional hockey players, Flynn and Myles are on the verge of falling in love with each other. But the close knit group is torn apart in an instant by tragedy.

While Myles and Oliver remain good friends and hockey teammates, Flynn goes out on her own to pursue a career as a lawyer. Seven years later, Flynn finds herself living in Chicago where the two men have also ended up playing for the Blackhawks. Flynn has continued to keep a bit of a distance, but when she discovers her fiancé has been cheating on her, she moves in with Oliver. And Oliver just happens to live next door to Myles. When Flynn and Myles are finally reunited, they are both forced to acknowledge their long-held attraction is still thriving.

The trio has done their best to move forward with their lives, but as individuals they have each run from the shared tragedy of their youth. As they learn how to be friends again, and Flynn and Myles realize how strong their feelings remain for each other, they must all come to terms with their loss and embrace what they want most from life going forward.

Despite the tragic backdrop of Big Stick, there are plenty of light hearted and romantic moments to level out the plot. I was immediately drawn in by the authors writing style and character development. From the get go, I was invested in this story and had a difficult time putting the book down once I reached the halfway mark. I simply kept turning the pages as my hopes increased. I truly wanted a happy ending for everyone.

Big Stick offers up a wide variety of emotions. It was written intelligently, and with a lot of heart. RC Stephens has picked up a new fan in me and I look forward to reading more of her books soon. If you’re looking for a great second chance, hockey romance, this is your book!
I received an Advance Reader Copy and I am giving my honest and voluntary review.

This may be another case of me allowing my expectations to supersede reality and thus spoil a book. Big Stick is the first book I've read from R.C. Stephens and I was super stoked to read it - I mean hockey, second chance, and best friend's sister (plus the hotness that is that cover!)? That's basically crack for me! So it pains me a bit to say that this missed the mark for me and I'm not quite sure why. The banter between Myles and Flynn was repetitive and confusing at times. They were both so wishy washy over each other and it came off as more annoying than angsty. And the roadblocks to their relationship were so obvious though the author didn't come right out and tell us why they avoided each other for so long for over half of the book. And then once that was discussed and resolved, she threw us for another (obvious) loop and dragged that out until the end of the book. When all of that came out, I didn't even understand the heroine's reaction to it and the way that it was resolved was just a little too easy considering how upset she was (even if I did think that she was overreacting). All this must sound super vague and I apologize but - no spoilers. There's definitely groundwork laid for their to be another book featuring the same characters, but honestly I had to power through this one so I doubt I'll be looking for it. All that being said, the book wasn't bad, it just wasn't for me. So I'm vacillating between 2.5 and 3 wine glasses. I can't remember the last time I felt so ambiguously meh about a book /
